Bula FC will play its first-ever home match in the OFC Pro League tomorrow night when they host PNG Hekari FC at 4R Stadium, Govind Park, a milestone coach Stéphane Auvray called “very special” for the club and Fijian football. The fixture, part of Round Five of the regional competition, marks the first time Fiji’s newly professional side has the advantage of a home crowd in the continental tournament.
Speaking to media on the eve of the match, Auvray said the occasion carries both pride and pressure. “It’s very special because it’s the first time that Fiji’s first professional football team will be playing at home,” he said, adding that players and supporters alike are eager to mark the moment. The coach said the squad have responded positively to recent form, returning to the pitch with confidence after a strong showing in Round Four.
Bula’s preparations were helped by a short break during the international window, Auvray noted, which allowed players recovery time since many did not feature for national teams. “We had some good rest because our players didn’t play during the international dates. So hopefully we didn’t lose our momentum and we will start strong against Hekari,” he said, stressing the need to convert preparation into consistent results.
Consistency, Auvray said, remains the club’s central objective as it navigates its inaugural campaign at the professional level. “Sometimes we didn’t get the points that we deserved, so it was good for the players to know that hard work pays off. We’re in a good mindset,” he said, framing the Govind Park fixture as a key part of the “home stretch” of the competition where each match can shape the club’s trajectory.
Despite Hekari’s lower position on the table, Auvray warned against complacency, reminding players that matchday realities can overturn form lines on paper. “Wherever the team stands it doesn’t really matter. Once you get on the field it’s 11 against 11. Every game is important,” he said, underlining his expectation for focus and full effort.
Tomorrow’s game will be watched closely by local supporters and Fijian football observers as a measure of Bula’s progress in the OFC Pro League and the broader development of professional club football in Fiji. The club will be aiming to use home advantage and the recent momentum to deliver a performance that honours the historic occasion and keeps their campaign moving forward.
