The Bula Boys football team has kicked off an important phase of their preparations for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, departing from Fiji to New Zealand. The squad has brought together 14 local players and 14 overseas-based players for training in Auckland, leading to the selection of the final 23-member team, which is set to travel to Wellington by March 12.

Team manager Kartik Reddy emphasized the competitive nature of the selection process, stating that every player must earn their place on the team, as no positions are secured. This strategy aims to assess the strongest possible squad to face the challenges of the qualifiers. Reddy remarked, “This phase gives us the opportunity to see the best possible squad available, as no one’s place is secure until the final squad is named.”

The Bula Boys are aware of the daunting task ahead, particularly when going up against the professional New Zealand All Whites. However, the team is maintaining a positive outlook, motivated by their desire to showcase their abilities on the international platform. They are set to play three important warm-up matches, beginning with Auckland United FC on March 8, proceeding to Eastern Suburbs AFC on March 9, and culminating with a match against A-League side Wellington Phoenix on March 15.

The team’s strong commitment to improvement is evident in their training sessions and the inclusion of both seasoned players and new talents. As they prepare for the crucial match on March 21 at Sky Stadium in Wellington, there is a palpable sense of optimism among players and fans alike, with aspirations of achieving a historic milestone in Oceania football.

Past obstacles, including injuries, have only fortified the team’s determination. The infusion of new players paired with a strong emphasis on teamwork bodes well for the future of Fijian football, especially as they strive for potential World Cup qualification—a remarkable achievement for any team in the Oceania region. The enthusiasm surrounding the Bula Boys illustrates their readiness and eagerness to meet the challenges that lie ahead.
