Opposition Member of Parliament Premila Kumar has criticized the government’s recent budget announcement, labeling it as a “feel-good” budget devoid of genuine transparency and accountability. Kumar emphasized her concerns about whether the announced benefits will effectively reach the citizens.
During her remarks, she underscored the necessity for the government to provide clear reports on the implementation of the current budget. “We have seen, even in this budget announcement, none of us heard how the last budget was delivered. So there’s a big silence on that,” Kumar stated, calling for an explanation of past budget effectiveness and future plans.
Echoing her sentiments, Opposition MP Jone Usamate pointed out that while intentions and plans are crucial, the execution of these plans is what ultimately impacts the public. He referenced potential benefits such as reduced bus fares and expressed the need for effective implementation of budget commitments.
Kumar’s scrutiny aligns with previous criticisms she has made regarding government financial management practices. Recently, she raised alarm over the government’s decision to reallocate funds from the 2023-2024 budget after its conclusion, questioning the rationale behind approving these changes in August, given that the financial year ended in July. Her consistent advocacy for transparency speaks to a broader concern about budgetary management that has implications for essential services in Fiji.
The upcoming budget debate in Parliament is anticipated to be a platform for more extensive discussions about these concerns, as stakeholders advocate for improved government accountability and effective utilization of public funds.
Overall, this situation presents an opportunity for the government to improve its communication with MPs and the public, ensure transparency, and strengthen trust in its budgetary processes. Public engagement and thoughtful execution of budget plans can lead to better outcomes for all Fijians if approached with diligence and commitment.
