Narayan Reddy, president of the Lautoka Residents and Ratepayers Association, has expressed his discontent regarding the absence of funding for municipal elections in the 2025-2026 National Budget. Reddy articulated that without financial provisions, it suggests that there may not be municipal elections this year, which would mark another delay in local governance.

Reddy also voiced his concerns over unmet governmental commitments, particularly regarding essential local priorities such as the long-awaited Lautoka swimming pool project and addressing the housing needs of street dwellers. Furthermore, he highlighted challenges posed by the government’s online business portal, which he termed unreliable, as well as defects in the processing of fire insurance policies.

Despite his criticisms, Reddy acknowledged several positive aspects of the budget, including reductions in VAT and food prices, assistance for school children with bus fares, and support for the elderly and impoverished communities. His praise reflects a balanced perspective, recognizing that while there are shortcomings, the government is making efforts to provide relief to grassroots communities.

During a recent national budget forum, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad emphasized that rebuilding the legislative framework, including reforms to the Local Government Act, is a priority for the government. This could signal a pathway toward addressing longstanding issues around municipal governance and potentially pave the way for future elections, fostering accountability and community representation.

Analysts note that the call for municipal elections has grown increasingly urgent, as local governance is vital for tackling pressing urban challenges and promoting citizen engagement. The hope is that by addressing these legislative frameworks and improving funding allocations, the government will empower local communities and rejuvenate democratic processes across Fiji.

With calls to action from community leaders like Reddy, there is optimism that the government will ultimately deliver on its promises, leading to improved governance and development projects that truly reflect the needs of the population.
