A resident from Bua is sounding the alarm over serious security concerns at local ports, highlighting a lack of effective monitoring that could lead to increased criminal activities. Mereoni Taginadavui voiced her apprehensions during discussions about the proposed Narcotic Bill at the Naulumatua House in Bua, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures.

Taginadavui pointed out the absence of K9 units to assist police in overseeing the movement of illegal substances, stating, “I see police around, but it is not enough.” The frequent movement of boats in the area has raised significant safety concerns for the community, as she warned that these security lapses could pave the way for drug trafficking and smuggling.

Recognizing that police presence alone is insufficient, she called for additional resources to be allocated for comprehensive monitoring. “We cannot rely on limited police presence alone. More resources are needed,” she stressed.

Moreover, Taginadavui advocated for greater community engagement, urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. She underscored that ensuring security is a collective effort that involves the entire community, stating, “Security is not just the responsibility of the police; it requires everyone’s effort.”

She highlighted the potential risks to children and youth if these threats go unaddressed, warning that a lack of guidance and law enforcement could jeopardize the next generation. In light of this, she called on the government to allocate more resources, including K9 units and surveillance systems, to bolster port security.

Additionally, she emphasized the importance of educational programs to raise awareness about the dangers of drugs and other illegal activities, reinforcing that a knowledgeable community is essential in combating these threats. By working together and implementing these measures, Bua can improve its security and protect its residents.
