Students in Yavulo, Nadroga, can look forward to safer journeys to school following the commissioning of a new footcrossing bridge. During the opening ceremony, Assistant Rural and Maritime Development Minister Jovesa Vocea emphasized that the initiative represents a key advancement in building resilient infrastructure across Fiji’s rural and maritime areas. The project, which received over $94,000 in funding support from the UNDP Pacific’s Governance for Resilient Development in the Pacific Programme, is part of a comprehensive effort under the new Minimum Standard Design for the Community Access Roads, Footpaths, and Footbridges (CARFF) Programme.
Vocea stated that this infrastructure project sets a new standard for safety and durability, addressing long-standing challenges faced by the community. The bridge will not only facilitate safer access for schoolchildren, mothers, and individuals with disabilities, but also promote economic growth within Yavulo by improving connectivity to essential services.
This project aligns with ongoing governmental efforts seen in similar initiatives across Fiji, where infrastructure developments have significantly enhanced community safety and accessibility. Previous projects, such as those at the Naseyani Bridge and the construction of new roads in various villages, illustrate the positive impact that improved infrastructure can have on rural communities.
The delivery of this bridge to the Yavulo community serves as a promising testament to the commitment towards creating safer, more connected environments for rural families. As the government continues to prioritize substantial infrastructure investments, it fosters hope for ongoing development and empowerment among local populations.
