Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has emphasized the need for improved communication between municipal councils and the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) to address the deteriorating conditions of the road network in urban areas. While engaging with municipal councils in the Western Division, Seruiratu pointed out that infrastructure upgrades must be a priority for local council leaders to communicate effectively to the FRA.
He noted the confusion over responsibilities regarding road and footpath repairs, stating that while the FRA has plans for improvements, councils have their own priorities that should be taken into account. “It’s not a big issue; it’s about synchronizing plans and agreeing on priorities,” he commented, emphasizing the importance of prior consultations before projects are launched within municipal boundaries.
Seruiratu also highlighted that the Nadi Town Council is currently facing resource issues. He cited delays from the Ministry of Local Government in providing essential operational resources, such as trucks, to the council.
Past discussions have shown that Seruiratu’s focus on improving road infrastructure aligns with broader concerns voiced across Fiji about the impact of poor road conditions on citizens, especially those in rural and remote areas. Deteriorating roads have been linked to heightened risks for drivers as well as impediments to accessing vital services like education and healthcare.
The ongoing dialogues regarding these infrastructure issues offer hope for future improvements. There is a growing recognition of the necessity for collective efforts between local councils and national authorities to effectively address these challenges, fostering better living conditions for all Fijians. Enhanced coordination could lead to actionable outcomes that improve accessibility to essential services and promote overall economic development in the region.
