The Chinese Embassy in Fiji recently held a welcoming reception for the Guadong Delegation and the Bright Journey Medical team, who spent two days providing cataract treatment at the CWM Eye Clinic.

Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, emphasized the significance of the relationship between Guadong, China, and Fiji, highlighting how it has facilitated advancements in various sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, and education. The ambassador noted that the partnership has been beneficial for the Fijian economy and educational initiatives.

Since establishing a sister-city relationship in 2011, Guadong and Suva have engaged in fruitful cooperation spanning infrastructure, trade, and cultural exchange. Notable projects funded by Guadong include the renovation of the Suva Civic Center and the upgrades to Marist Brothers High School.

Ambassador Zhou pointed out that cataract disease continues to be a major impediment for many Fijians in caring for their families, but efforts by the Bright Medical Team have significantly alleviated this challenge. Since 2013, the Bright Medical Team has been visiting Fiji and other Pacific Island nations to perform free cataract surgeries, having helped over 200 patients. This team is affectionately referred to as the “Angel of Light” by many in the region.

Hung Wenyong, a member of the Bright Medical Team, expressed gratitude for the chance to treat 50 eye patients in Fiji, with 47 of them suffering from cataracts. He noted that while the primary goal was to provide medical assistance, strengthening the relationship between Fiji and China was also a key achievement of their visit.

Overall, the collaboration between China and Fiji continues to show positive impacts, promoting significant progress in the Fijian economy and furthering strong diplomatic ties.

This story reflects a hopeful and constructive international relationship, showcasing the positive outcomes of medical aid and cooperation, which can be a model for similar future endeavors across the globe.
