For students at Navunikabi Catholic School in Namosi, returning to classes this week involved navigating the challenging waters of the Wainikoroiluva River. Parents reminisced about their own school days, recalling similar crossings. “My parents used to carry me across this same river so I could go to school,” shared Mosese Likutibi while aiding his daughter, Karita, across the swift current. “Now I am doing the same for her.”
This daily river crossing has become essential for families, as the bridge connecting Saliadrau Village remains unfinished. With ongoing renovations at the school hostel, students must travel from home each day, complicating the process further.
Village headman Kusitino Vuata noted that the bridge construction started in January of last year but was halted in October due to delays in receiving imported materials. Despite government assurances that the bridge will be completed this year, residents are concerned about safety issues arising from the delay. “We hope the work can be sped up for the sake of our children,” Mr. Vuata emphasized. He also mentioned that a request for a small boat to safely transport students across the river has yet to be met.
While the situation poses challenges, it underscores the community’s commitment to education and safety for the next generation. Villagers remain hopeful that improvements will be made soon, allowing children to cross more securely and focus on their studies.
