Residents of the Tunalia farming community in Nadi have expressed their gratitude to the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) for addressing concerns regarding their wooden bridge. Following the recent collapse of the Vuniyasi Bridge, local residents were anxious about the safety of their own bridge.

In response to these concerns, the FRA announced an emergency repair plan for Tunalia Bridge Two, situated along Tunalia Road. The FRA’s CEO, Apisai Ketenilagi, confirmed that the bridge would undergo a month of emergency repairs due to its deteriorating condition. The closure will take place from 7 PM on Sunday, February 9, until 7 PM on Sunday, March 9. Signage for road closures will be put up ahead of time, directing motorists along an alternative route.

Local resident Abhaya Nand Sharma highlighted the impact of the bridge closure on schoolchildren and residents needing to travel for work or emergencies. Sharma pointed out that students now must take a longer route via Aralevu Road to reach school, which complicates daily commutes and access to essential services.

Sharma, who reflected on the bridge’s long-standing presence — having been built over 60 years ago, even before his birth — requested that the FRA expedite repairs for the sake of the community, especially for the children.

The timely intervention by the FRA reflects an important commitment to infrastructure safety and community welfare. While repairs may temporarily disrupt local access, the resulting enhancements will ultimately benefit residents by ensuring safer passage in the long term.
