Mohammed Shahfraaz Ali, a former regional engineer for the Water Authority of Fiji, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for accepting a bribe. Magistrate Jeremaia Savou delivered the sentence at the Suva Magistrate’s Court, which includes a non-parole period of 12 months. Ali was found guilty last December of receiving a return ticket to Sydney worth $AUS1430.60 (F$2087) from Sphynx Solutions Pty Ltd as a benefit linked to his official duties.

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) presented compelling evidence during the trial, showing that Ali’s actions warranted a strong response to discourage future bribery in public service. Mr. Savou underscored Ali’s major culpability and stressed the necessity for accountability in the public sector, making it clear that no part of the sentence would be suspended to serve as a warning against similar offenses.

In addition to his imprisonment, Ali has been fined $3,000, with the court indicating that failure to pay by the designated deadline could result in extended incarceration.

This case underscores Fiji’s commitment to battling corruption and promoting ethical behavior among public servants. The judiciary’s decisive approach aims not only to address specific incidents of wrongdoing but also to nurture a culture of integrity and accountability within the public sector. Such measures reflect a hopeful trajectory towards enhanced governance in Fiji, as the society works to reinforce the values of trust and responsibility among its officials.
