Ratu Anare Roraqoca Davetanivalu, a 24-year-old from Nairukuruku, Naitasiri, recently made history as the first lawyer in his family, officially admitted to the Bar at the University of the South Pacific (USP). This momentous occasion, celebrated on Tuesday, was particularly heartfelt as he dedicated it to his late grandmother, whose strength during her battle with breast cancer two years ago inspired his journey.
In a reflection on his achievement, Ratu Anare expressed immense relief at being sworn in, recognizing the weight of responsibility that comes with his new role. He highlighted that beginning a legal career is a gradual process requiring integrity and professionalism, acknowledging the challenges he faced during the Professional Diploma in Legal Practice (PDLP) program, which he described as just one of many hurdles.
He emphasized the significance of practical experience in the legal field, noting, “While theoretical knowledge is crucial, the university’s curriculum does not fully prepare students for the realities of legal practice.” This sentiment resonates with many recent graduates, including Pio Navara, who shared his own experience of overcoming substantial financial obstacles to achieve his goal of becoming a lawyer at 26.
Ratu Anare and Navara exemplify how determination can triumph over adversity. Their journeys highlight a growing trend of young law graduates from USP showing dedication and resilience in pursuit of their dreams.
As Ratu Anare begins his legal career, he encourages future lawyers to broaden their knowledge, advising them to “Read not only law books but everything around you… knowledge can come from any source.” This mindset illustrates a proactive approach to learning that could greatly benefit aspiring legal professionals.
Ratu Anare’s commitment and the support he received from his family serve as powerful testimonies to the potential for remarkable achievements through personal resilience. His story, alongside those of his fellow graduates, provides hope and motivation for others in the legal field, shining a positive light on the future of law in Fiji.
