Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) is emerging as a crucial option for women dealing with the challenging symptoms of menopause, according to women’s health specialist Dr. Tema Rasoki-Windust. While she highlights the potential for significant relief and quality of life improvements, particularly regarding issues like hot flashes, sleep disturbances, and mood fluctuations, the access to MHT in Fiji remains limited and inconsistent, primarily confined to hospital pharmacies.

In Dr. Rasoki-Windust’s view, this lack of availability needs urgent attention. She stresses that many women may endure years of menopause without realizing that effective treatments are available. “Just because menopause is a natural phase doesn’t mean women should suffer in silence,” she asserts, noting how untreated symptoms can impact overall well-being.

Furthermore, Dr. Rasoki-Windust points out the necessity for healthcare practitioners to be well-informed about the safe prescription and management of MHT, particularly regarding its contraindications for certain women, such as those with a history of hormonally responsive breast cancer.

The demand for improved menopause awareness and education parallels findings from previous initiatives in Fiji that call for open dialogues about women’s health. For instance, the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement has been advocating for more significant recognition of menopause and its effects, highlighting the importance of support systems within families and communities. This ongoing conversation can encourage a shift in societal attitudes regarding menopause, moving towards a model that prioritizes women’s health and well-being.

Hopeful developments in this area suggest that increased public awareness and a commitment to better training for health professionals could lead to improved access to MHT, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for many women navigating menopause in Fiji. By fostering an environment that supports open dialogue around menopause, the community can work towards a more compassionate and informed approach to women’s health.
