Shamima Ali, the coordinator of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC), has expressed concern over the lack of female representation in political leadership, especially as women are increasingly succeeding in sectors like technology and law enforcement. In a recent statement, she lamented, “We don’t see women in leadership roles and particularly in parliament. We are very backward as far as parliament is concerned.”

Ali pointed out that while women have made significant strides in various professional fields, achieving leadership positions in politics remains a daunting challenge. She emphasized that the treatment of women in political environments is often discouraging, further entrenching gender disparities within these institutions.

She acknowledged the advancements women have made in academics and other sectors but stressed that more proactive measures are essential to enhance women’s representation in governance. Ali underscored the crucial role women play in tackling critical societal concerns such as climate change and drug abuse, emphasizing the value of their input across various sectors.

Her concerns are echoed by numerous advocacy groups engaged in discussions around increasing female participation in local government. Past conversations highlight internal obstacles women face—including a lack of mutual support and societal expectations—that often stifle female empowerment in leadership roles.

Ali’s remarks resonate deeply in the context of Fiji’s ongoing dialogue about governance and gender equality. The call for systemic changes, including the establishment of supportive frameworks and cultivating a culture that promotes women’s leadership, is essential for creating a more equitable political environment.

This dialogue surrounding women’s representation in politics not only showcases the existing hurdles but also signals a pathway for change through ongoing advocacy and collaboration. With collective efforts from civil society and governmental bodies, there is a hopeful outlook for a future where women’s voices are equally heard in vital decision-making processes that shape the nation’s trajectory.
