The investigation into the tragic death of featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider is still ongoing, with findings to be disclosed to the public in due course. This information was shared by Jese Saukuru, the Minister for Youth and Sports, during a recent parliamentary session. His comments followed a query from Opposition MP Prem Chand regarding the Boxing Commission of Fiji’s responsibility for ensuring adequate insurance coverage for boxers participating in an October 26 event in Nadi.
Saukuru explained that the three-member Board of Inquiry has not yet concluded its investigation, stating that they are still in the process of conducting interviews, including those with individuals from abroad. He assured that once the inquiry is completed, a report will be presented to the public, recognizing Haider’s contributions to Fiji.
While Saukuru refrained from providing further details, he emphasized the importance of allowing the investigation to proceed without prejudice until all facts have been established.
This situation highlights the careful process of investigating sports-related incidents to ensure accountability and safety for athletes. As the inquiry progresses, it is hopeful that the findings will lead to improvements in the sport’s regulatory framework, ensuring better protection for boxers in the future. The community remains optimistic that a clearer understanding of the events surrounding Haider’s death will emerge, ultimately contributing to safer sporting practices.
