Bringing three International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Asia Pacific titles to Fiji requires significant investment, according to South Pacific Boxing Promotions director Mohammed Shameem. He revealed that the organization has spent over $100,000 to host the event, which involves flying in top boxers, their trainers, and IBO officials, while also complying with the Boxing Commission of Fiji’s regulations.
Shameem, who has a long-standing passion for boxing stemming back to the 1960s when his father Noor Mohammed was a promoter, stated, “I was six years old when I watched boxing for the first time at Ba’s Civic Theatre.” Over the years, he has remained committed to supporting the local boxing community, notably assisting in the rise of champions like Fiji’s light heavyweight champion, Savenaca Naliva.
As he prepares for his 19th promotion, which includes four title fights—three IBO titles and one Fiji title—Shameem expressed his satisfaction in reaching out to people and making a difference in their lives, despite experiencing losses in many of the events.
A highlight of the upcoming event will be the presence of global sports star Sonny Bill Williams, who will engage with schools and communities across Fiji, discussing the dangers of drugs with young people.
In fight news, Australia’s Tonga Tongotongo has arrived in Fiji to defend his IBO Asia Pacific cruiserweight title against local boxer Sebastian ‘The Sniper’ Singh. Tongotongo boasts an undefeated record, having won all eight of his fights by knockout. He acknowledged Singh’s reputation as a tough competitor, saying, “What happens is what it is.”
Additionally, Lachlan O’Shea will also challenge for the IBO Asia Pacific super welterweight title against Winston Hill. O’Shea expressed excitement for the fight, calling it an honor to come as a challenger. He anticipates a thrilling matchup, stating, “We will have a good toe-to-toe in the middle of the ring.”
