Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the critical need for enhancing efficiency and compliance among town councils to better support Fiji’s tourism industry and ensure timely delivery of essential infrastructure. This was expressed during the recent National Budget Consultations held in Nadi for the fiscal year 2025–2026.

In his remarks, Professor Prasad recognized the obstacles currently faced in the tourism sector, particularly pointing to delays in project approvals and the ongoing issues with town councils that hinder development timelines. He asserted that it is imperative to establish a more effective system that drives progress beneficial to all Fijians.

Prasad’s call for improvement is not solely focused on bolstering tourism but also aims at fostering a government that is more responsive and efficient. He urged the necessity for accountability and streamlined processes that can dramatically eliminate the bottlenecks currently experienced in project approvals.

The consultations are an ongoing effort, with the next meeting scheduled to take place at Lautoka’s Girmit Center later today. This approach of inclusive discussion reflects the government’s dedication to engaging with citizens and ensuring their voices shape national policies that resonate with the actual needs of the community.

Additionally, previous discussions have highlighted efforts towards broader economic diversification, improved ease of doing business, and strategic partnerships with the private sector to enhance infrastructure. These foundational steps, coupled with the current push for more efficient local governance, aim to create a more resilient economic environment for Fiji’s future.

Overall, the emphasis on improving local governance and support for tourism bodes well for community development and economic growth across Fiji. A unified and efficient approach could lay the groundwork for a prosperous future, enhancing infrastructure and living conditions for all citizens.
