There is an urgent need to enhance financial literacy among Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Fiji. Many of these businesses are struggling to meet credit assessment criteria, which directly affects their ability to secure financing and grow. Watisoni Nata Junior, Chair of the MSME Council, addressed this issue while presenting the council’s comments to the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs regarding the Fiji Development Bank’s 2022 and 2023 Annual Reports.

Nata emphasized the critical role that financial education plays in enabling MSMEs to meet the necessary requirements for obtaining loans from banks. He pointed out, “There’s a hole, and this is juxtaposed to why we appeared before the Standing Committee last time: accessibility to finance. This theme is very pertinent to MSMEs because the banking system is not very MSME-friendly.”

The challenges faced by MSMEs were further underlined during the global pandemic, when many businesses had to navigate online applications but encountered significant difficulties in doing so. To combat these challenges, the Fiji Development Bank has initiated a digital financial literacy program specifically designed to boost financial knowledge among rural businesses.

The context of Nata’s comments aligns well with broader findings in recent reports, such as the National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and Vision 2050, which highlight various obstacles – including inadequate infrastructure and a lack of cohesive support systems – that impede MSME growth. By addressing these issues through educational and infrastructural reforms, there remains a hopeful avenue for the development of the sector, which significantly contributes to Fiji’s economy.

In summary, improving financial literacy and access to resources for MSMEs is essential for their growth and sustainability. By empowering these businesses with the knowledge they need to navigate the financial landscape, Fiji can foster a more robust economy that benefits everyone involved.
