The founder and CEO of Pacific Specialist Health (PSH) Care Hospital, Parvish Kumar, recently advocated for the inclusion of tax incentives for health service providers catering to both local and international patients in the upcoming 2025-2026 National Budget. Kumar made this proposal during his address at the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry budget forum.
He emphasized that implementing tax incentives, such as a VAT waiver or refund scheme similar to the Tourist VAT Refund system, could significantly enhance Fiji’s medical tourism sector. These incentives would not only make healthcare more affordable for local residents by lowering out-of-pocket expenses but also provide an edge in competitive global markets for medical tourism.
Kumar noted that attracting international patients from countries like the US, Italy, Germany, and Australia presents a unique opportunity for healthcare development in Fiji, as many seek procedures at PSH for prices that are much lower than those abroad. He argued that a healthy workforce translates into a productive one, urging the government to support local healthcare foundations to offer free medical procedures to those in need, further emphasizing that every investment in health can yield substantial savings in social welfare and productivity.
The call for tax incentives is in line with previous discussions about enhancing healthcare infrastructure and services, which the Fijian government is also keen to support. With ongoing improvements being made at PSH, including the establishment of advanced medical departments and successful surgeries, Fiji is positioning itself as a burgeoning hub for medical tourism. With continued advocacy for policy changes and government collaboration, this innovative approach could lead to significant benefits for both the economy and public health in Fiji.
This positive trajectory indicates that with strategic investments and partnerships, Fiji has the potential to become a respected player in the global medical tourism arena, ultimately enhancing healthcare services for residents and visitors alike.
