Vendors at the Suva Municipal Market are expressing their frustration over persistent drainage issues that they claim have remained unaddressed despite numerous complaints. Fulori Toga, a vendor operating in the Vale ni Kana kiosks, highlighted the challenges they face, stating that the ongoing blockages disrupt their daily operations and pose significant hygiene risks.
Despite these concerns, Tevita Boseiwaqa, the chief executive officer of the Suva City Council (SCC), indicated that the council has not received any formal complaints regarding the drainage problems. He acknowledged that blockages are a recurrent issue, attributing the problems to the aging drainage system that tends to malfunction every two weeks in the Vale ni Kana and fish market areas.
“The underground drainage is damaged, and at times the whole outlet gets blocked,” Mr. Boseiwaqa explained, confirming that the section is currently obstructed and that they are awaiting a contractor to conduct necessary flushing works. He also noted the importance of proper hygiene practices, mentioning that vendors have been advised against washing fish in specific areas to reduce waste that contributes to blockages.
Although Mr. Boseiwaqa emphasized that cleanliness is a shared responsibility, he recognized the challenges in altering traditional practices. He pointed out that all vendors underwent hygiene training last year but mentioned that some still need to adopt better methods.
While it is clear that the Suva City Council is aware of the drainage issues and is making efforts to address them, the situation highlights the need for ongoing communication between vendors and the council. Vendors are encouraged to report any issues through the market manager or the Market Vendors Association to foster a cleaner and more efficient market environment.
