As the new school year approaches, many parents are implementing a strategic shopping approach to avoid the rush and potential shortages when government assistance becomes available. With $200 in back-to-school support expected to be released on January 16, just ahead of the school term starting on January 26, families are taking proactive steps to secure essential supplies.

Residents of Saweni, Kartika Prabhashni Chand and her husband Ajeet Shankar, completed their shopping last week at a single location to minimize city traffic and the overwhelming crowds that typically accompany the release of the assistance. Ms. Chand shared, “We have two girls and we’ve bought their books, bags, shoes, calculators, and all the stationery. It’s important for parents to plan because if we shop next week, it will be very busy. We were able to get all the things we needed in one trip.”

She encouraged other parents to avoid the last-minute shopping rush. “The town will be very busy and since it’s very hot, it’s better to do your shopping in advance,” she advised.

Sikeli Nasau from Yanuya, Malolo, was also spotted shopping with his two children, focusing on school bags and other necessities early to stay ahead of the expected rush. “I managed to buy the children’s school necessities because whenever the $200 back-to-school assistance comes out, the shops are usually packed. This is why I brought them to town today,” he noted, adding that he found the prices were more affordable by shopping early.

As the school year looms closer, these proactive parents highlight the benefits of early shopping, ensuring their children are well-prepared while avoiding the stress and chaos that accompany last-minute endeavors. Their preparation sets a positive example for others in the community and underlines the importance of planning ahead for a smooth back-to-school transition.
