The government has reiterated its support for the Banaban community as they commemorate 80 years since their relocation to Rabi. Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo described this milestone as an acknowledgment of the courage and resilience demonstrated by the Banabans, who faced significant challenges upon their arrival in 1945, including food scarcity, disease, and difficult living conditions.
During his address, Vosarogo announced that the Banaban Act is currently under review to guarantee transparent elections for the Rabi Council of Leaders. Additionally, a Cabinet Paper aimed at securing full recognition for Banabans and Kioans through naturalisation is nearing completion.
He praised the Banaban people’s remarkable strength and determination, noting their ability to unite and rebuild governance systems while transforming Rabi into a community that embodies dignity, identity, and hope.
The Minister highlighted ongoing development initiatives, including renovations of community facilities, new boats, and vehicles, as well as key infrastructure projects such as the Karoko Landing and Vunikura Jetty. These developments are intended to enhance trade, transportation, and overall economic growth for the community.
Moreover, Vosarogo emphasized the importance of inclusive development across various sectors, including agriculture, fisheries, small enterprises, and tourism. He reaffirmed the commitment to ensuring that women, youth, and persons with disabilities are actively involved in leadership roles, fostering a more equitable future for all members of the community.
