Vocational students at the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) in Lautoka are set to gain valuable skills in baking, with the recent establishment of a $20,000 bakery project aimed at empowering individuals with disabilities. This initiative was highlighted during an official handover ceremony on Tuesday, where Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, emphasized its significance in fostering entrepreneurship and community contribution amongst the participants.

“This bakery is more than just a facility; it’s a platform where they can learn, earn, and grow,” Kiran stated, reinforcing the project’s alignment with the government’s broader commitment to enhance vocational training and create income-generating opportunities for persons with disabilities.

West Eka Loco, the NCPD centre manager, noted that this is the first time a bread oven has been provided to the center, following discussions with the minister regarding essential items needed for skills training programs. The introduction of this baking facility is a promising milestone, expanding the toolset available for vocational students.

FMF staff will provide training on basic baking techniques, allowing the students to produce baked goods for local markets, including government workers and community stakeholders. This initiative echoes similar efforts across Fiji aimed at uplifting marginalized communities through vocational training programs. Previous initiatives have celebrated successes, including the Job Discovery Programme, which has successfully placed students with disabilities into stable employment after completing their training.

Such programs are vital in creating inclusive environments where individuals with diverse capabilities can thrive. They not only empower participants but also contribute to local economies by introducing more skilled workers into the marketplace.

The NCPD’s bakery project serves as a beacon of hope, illustrating the impact of community-focused initiatives in promoting inclusivity and self-sufficiency for individuals with disabilities. As these students embark on their baking journey, there is optimism that they will capitalize on this opportunity, enhancing not just their own lives but also contributing positively to their families and communities.
