Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Alitia Bainivalu, has disclosed her official overseas trips scheduled between April 2024 and April 2025, showcasing a commitment to transparency regarding government expenditures. In her statement, she emphasized that these trips are focused on delivering tangible benefits to the citizens of Fiji, stating, “Every forum, every meeting, every seat at the table was an opportunity to bring something back for the people of Fiji.”

The minister pointed out that nine of her trips will be funded by international partners, significantly reducing the costs to taxpayers. The total expenditure for these travels is projected at $77,030.28, of which $58,000 will result from a government-funded trip to Switzerland.

Highlighting the importance of these initiatives, Bainivalu explained that they aim to promote sustainable practices in fisheries and forestry while facilitating market access for local farmers and fishers. “I will always ensure that any travel I undertake serves a clear national purpose,” she asserted, underscoring the necessity of investing in international dialogues to enhance Fijian agriculture and economic development.

This announcement aligns with broader government trends concerning international travel expenses, which have been under scrutiny for their impacts on public funds. Previous reports have revealed that numerous government officials undertook 147 official trips costing nearly $1.9 million, raising discussions about fiscal responsibility in the context of Fiji’s economic challenges.

The proactive approach by Bainivalu indicates a commitment not only to transparency but also towards the positive impacts of these international engagements. The hope is that such initiatives will lead to meaningful partnerships and investments that can ultimately bolster Fiji’s agriculture sector, contributing to community welfare and resilience.

In conclusion, as Minister Bainivalu embarks on these international missions, there is optimism that her efforts will open doors for sustainable practices and enhancements in the fisheries and forestry sectors, providing substantial benefits for the people of Fiji.
