The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has clarified that the decision to grant early release to former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama was made strictly in accordance with established corrections policy and law. The FCS emphasized that its decisions are based on fairness, transparency, and due process, without regard to the political backgrounds or public status of inmates.

Bainimarama’s application for early release was evaluated in line with Section 46(3) of the Corrections Act, which outlines specific eligibility criteria, including security classification and medical assessments. The FCS stated that his case was assessed impartially, focusing on his behavior while incarcerated and his health status.

Crucially, the FCS highlighted that the treatment and release of prisoners is an operational matter handled solely by the Commissioner, without the need for referrals to the Minister or other offices. This underscores the independence of the corrections process, reaffirming the organization’s commitment to justice and legal compliance.

In a reiteration of its principles, the FCS assured the public that its operations are guided by the rule of law, with a promise to protect the rights of all inmates in accordance with the Corrections Act and constitutional mandates.

Overall, this decision reflects a commitment to maintaining an equitable and lawful correctional system, reinforcing the judiciary’s role in ensuring that justice is administered impartially.
