The upcoming trial involving former Health Minister Dr. Neil Prakash Sharma, former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, and former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum is set to commence on March 2. State Counsel, Lasani Tabuakuro, announced during a pre-trial conference that the prosecution intends to streamline its case by reducing the number of witnesses from 40 to 25.

Bainimarama and Sayed-Khaiyum appeared before Justice Usaia Ratuvili, while Dr. Sharma was excused from the proceedings. Tabuakuro confirmed the State’s readiness to proceed with the trial and stated that the prosecution would provide the defense with the trial bundle by the following Friday.

Bainimarama faces a single count of abuse of office, while Sayed-Khaiyum is charged with one count of abuse of office and another count of obstructing the course of justice. Dr. Sharma is charged with two counts of abuse of office and two counts of breach of trust as a public officer. These charges relate to allegations that the trio failed to adhere to the statutory requirements of the 2010 Procurement Regulations while awarding tenders for medical equipment in 2011.

Counsel for Bainimarama and Sayed-Khaiyum, Gul Fatima, indicated she would await the revised witness list from the prosecution. The matter has been adjourned and will reconvene for trial on March 2, a date that marks a significant moment in this high-profile case. The case underscores the ongoing scrutiny of public officials and the importance of accountability within government operations.
