The State has initiated proceedings to revoke the bail of 23-year-old Emosi Tikoicina, who is charged with arson for allegedly setting fire to the Navuso Agricultural Technical Institute on April 7, 2023. Prosecutor Zenith Zunaid informed the High Court in Suva that Tikoicina violated his bail conditions by committing further offenses, including recent charges of theft and burglary, which resulted in six-month suspended sentences for each charge.
Despite these breaches, it was noted that Tikoicina has consistently attended court hearings. The defense attorney, Paula Gade, requested a 14-day extension to file a response to the State’s bail revocation application, stating he needed to seek instructions from Tikoicina. Judge Thushara Rajasinghe has set deadlines for the response and has scheduled a hearing for June 13.
Tikoicina’s trial is set to commence on August 4, and he continues to face serious charges arising from the incidents involving the Technical Institute. This case highlights ongoing concerns about compliance with bail conditions and the legal process surrounding serious criminal allegations.
In light of the serious issues at hand, it is hoped that the court proceedings will ensure justice is served while also considering Tikoicina’s rights and circumstances. There remains the potential for rehabilitation if the legal process reaches a resolution that allows for it, which could positively impact both him and the community.
