Daniel Whippy, the managing director of Carpenters Fiji Limited, has successfully obtained a variation of his bail, permitting him to travel to Chennai, India, for knee surgery. This decision arose during a court appearance on January 12, where he and co-accused John Masi O’Connor, the former CEO of the National Fire Authority (NFA), faced charges related to abuse of office.
Whippy’s attorney, Suruj Sharma, explained the need for the medical procedure, noting that earlier requests for a stem cell treatment in the United States had to be redirected due to delays and other complications. The court was informed that Whippy is scheduled to depart for India on January 30 and anticipates a two-week recovery period before returning on March 2.
The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), represented by lawyer Lavinia Ravuikadavu, did not oppose the travel request, reflecting a degree of cooperation regarding Whippy’s medical needs. Meanwhile, O’Connor has pleaded not guilty to charges of altering a Fire Investigation Report from April 8, 2018, which pertains to a fire at the Morris Hedstrom warehouse in Walu Bay, allegedly for personal gain.
Both defendants are charged under Section 45 in conjunction with Section 139 of the Crimes Act of 2009, with Whippy accused of counseling O’Connor in committing the offense. The court proceedings highlight the intersection of ongoing legal issues and personal health matters, emphasizing the importance of due process in the judicial system.
The court has adjourned the matter and will reconvene on March 3, coinciding with Whippy’s return from India. As he prepares for surgery, there is hope that he will receive effective treatment and that the legal proceedings will unfold with appropriate measures for accountability and justice.
