The High Court has denied bail to former corrections officer Epeli Laqeni, who is facing murder charges related to the death of his de facto partner. Justice Usaia Ratuvili expressed a lack of confidence that Mr. Laqeni would surrender himself or appear in court if granted bail. The charge stems from an alleged incident that occurred between September 3 and 5 in Nakasi, Nausori.
In his application for bail, Mr. Laqeni raised concerns regarding the conditions in the remand center, highlighting issues of overcrowding and an increasing number of HIV cases among inmates. He noted that he is currently housed in an infirmary meant for six beds but is accommodating 12 remandees. Additionally, he argued that being granted bail would allow him to assist his Legal Aid lawyer in preparing for his trial.
Despite Mr. Laqeni’s arguments, the State firmly opposed the bail application, presenting strong circumstantial evidence, including the admissions made during his police interview. Justice Ratuvili ruled that granting bail was not in the best interests of justice, leading to Mr. Laqeni’s continued remand. He is scheduled to enter a plea on December 23.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges within the correctional system and concerns about inmate welfare. As Mr. Laqeni awaits his next court appearance, the legal proceedings will continue to draw attention to both the severity of the allegations and the conditions at the remand facility.
