Two men facing charges of aggravated robbery were denied bail during their appearance at the Suva Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Lagani Rabukawaqa and Saimoni Macedru, who are jointly charged with the crime, appeared in court where the prosecution raised objections to granting bail, asking for additional time to prepare a formal response.
The court has given the prosecution until January 6 to submit its detailed arguments. During the proceedings, Tobia Ravuiwa, representing Rabukawaqa from the Legal Aid Commission, requested permission to file a formal bail application. He highlighted that his client had been identified during the arrest process and mentioned an alibi, asserting that Rabukawaqa’s sister is willing to verify his presence at home at the time of the alleged robbery.
Ravuiwa also indicated that Rabukawaqa is looking for bail to pursue further tertiary education at a Polytech institute, where his father serves as a lecturer. However, despite these arguments, the court denied bail for both men as the prosecution’s objections remain unresolved.
The charges stem from an alleged incident earlier this month, in which Rabukawaqa and Macedru are accused of robbing a 50-year-old male victim of his wristwatch and nine dollars in cash at the Top Shop in Raiwai, Suva. The court has adjourned the case until January 16, during which the accused men will remain at the remand centre.
