Zoe Maharaj has been remanded at the Suva Magistrate’s Court following her arrest during a joint police operation in Delainavesi last week. During the operation, substances found in a vehicle she was in tested positive for methamphetamine, and an explosive device was reportedly in her possession.
She faces multiple charges, including unlawful possession of illicit drugs, possession of property believed to be proceeds of crime, possession of breaking implements, and unlawful possession of explosives.
Her lawyer, Isimeli Keteca, requested bail, citing that Maharaj has been in custody since the weekend and is facing medical issues requiring appointments at the Valelevu Health Center and Aspen Medical Center this week. However, the police prosecutor opposed the bail application, highlighting that Maharaj has three pending cases and has allegedly reoffended while on bail previously. They stressed the seriousness of the charges, given the presence of a grenade.
In response, the defense indicated that there was no evidence in the disclosures regarding the analysis of the explosive device and questioned its authenticity, pending expert verification.
Magistrate Joseph Daurewa stated that a decision on bail would require thorough consideration of all concerns raised by both the prosecution and defense. He has ordered the counsels to submit a formal bail application, with the matter scheduled for reevaluation on the 24th of this month.
The case has garnered attention due to the severity of the allegations and the legal proceedings that will follow. The judicial process aims to ensure a fair evaluation of the situation while addressing public safety concerns surrounding explosive devices and illegal substances.
