The Fiji Court of Appeal is set to hear the bail application for former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho, who is currently serving a one-year sentence. Qiliho appeared in court alongside former Prime Minister Bainimarama, the latter having secured an early release last month.

Both were convicted by the High Court in Suva on March 14 this year. During the court session, their attorney, Devanesh Sharma, indicated that they would be withdrawing a previous motion related to their conviction and sentencing that was filed on April 23 of last year. This earlier motion sought a stay on their sentencing in the Court of Appeal but proceeded without resolution.

Sharma expressed confidence that Qiliho would also be granted similar leniency to that of Bainimarama. Justice Chandana Prematilaka allowed the applicants 21 days to submit their arguments regarding bail pending the appeal. The State will have until January 21 to respond, with Mr. Sharma allowed to reply by January 28. The next court mention is scheduled for January 30.

This development illustrates ongoing legal proceedings in Fiji that may shape the futures of both individuals involved. It also highlights the judicial process in place, allowing for the potential reconsideration of sentencing terms. There is a hopeful undertone to this situation, as the possibility of bail could pave the way for further discussions around justice and rehabilitation in the legal system.
