BA Women’s Football Club is on an exciting journey as they compete in the OFC Women’s Champions League in Tahiti. However, their debut has not been without its challenges. The team set out from Nadi International Airport with great expectations, representing Fiji on a prestigious regional stage.

Unfortunately, complications arose soon after departure. Two players, Lantana Alisi and Mereoni Tora, were unable to travel due to pending police clearance paperwork, limiting the squad’s depth. Upon arrival at Papeete International Airport, the situation escalated with four players and one team official detained by local immigration due to issues with documentation. This left the initial atmosphere tense, but thanks to the cooperation between Fiji Immigration, Tahiti Immigration, and the Fiji Football Association, the detained members were released and joined the team in camp, boosting morale.

Head coach Charlene Lockington expressed her optimism despite the setbacks and emphasized the importance of unity in facing their opponents in Group A, which includes formidable teams like Penama Tigers FC from Vanuatu, Henderson Eels FC from Solomon Islands, and Tupapa Maraerenga FC from Cook Islands. Their first match is against Penama Tigers this Sunday, and the team will aim to rise to the occasion.

Interestingly, Penama Tigers are also dealing with logistical complications, with some players reportedly stuck in Fiji due to visa problems. This may level the playing field as both teams prepare for their opening match.

With the OFC regulations mandating a minimum of 16 registered players for participation, Ba Women are hoping that all remaining players receive clearance. This is Ba’s first venture into the OFC Women’s Champions League, and they are keen to represent Fiji with pride. Coach Lockington has called for support from fans, emphasizing the need for backing as the team makes its mark internationally.

Though the road has started off rocky, the determination and spirit of the Ba Women’s Football Club shine through as they focus on the challenges ahead in Tahiti. Their journey not only represents a significant opportunity for their players and club but also contributes to the growing excitement and investment in women’s football across Oceania. The hope is that this experience will inspire future generations of female athletes and deepen the roots of women’s sports in the region.
