Ba U16 Team’s Grit: From Improvised Training to National Quarter-Finals

The under-16 team from Ba Methodist High School utilized old tires and ropes for their training in preparation for the Vodafone Super Deans tournament held last Saturday. Despite suffering a loss to a strong Ratu Kadavulevu School team with a score of 30-8, the players regarded the match as a valuable learning experience.

Assistant coach Paula Rokotuiloma expressed pride in the boys for reaching the cup quarterfinals. He noted, “It’s a learning opportunity for us, and we will come back stronger next year.” Rokotuiloma highlighted the numerous challenges the team faced, but emphasized that the players remained determined and resilient amid difficulties.

“Due to a lack of resources, we had to be creative with our training, using items available at the school such as ropes and tires to get the boys in shape. Our training sessions lasted just one hour each afternoon after school and included road runs as well,” he explained.

Looking ahead, Rokotuiloma confirmed their intent to strive for qualification again next year. He remarked on their journey, noting that they had previously defeated Natabua in the zone semi-final and finished as runners-up against Ba Provincial High School. Although this year had its trials, with perseverance from the boys and support from their parents and guardians, the team achieved a significant milestone by reaching the national quarter-finals for the first time in the school’s history for an U16 team.
