The Ba Town Council has appointed Manjula Devi as the new Acting Chief Executive, following direction from Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa. Devi steps into this role after Moshim Khan, who was previously acting in the position, has resumed duties as the Special Administrators Chair. This transition comes after a significant workers’ protest involving 34 general workers who halted operations to express grievances.

Minister Nalumisa emphasized the importance of transparent communication from municipal councils regarding employment conditions, asserting that it is crucial for all information relating to job terms and changes to be shared with both staff and union representatives. He noted that many of the concerns raised during the protest have been addressed, and it will now be the responsibility of the new Acting CEO to handle remaining issues, particularly those related to pay negotiations between the council and the relevant unions.

The Minister underscored that effective dialogue is vital in resolving disputes, and he urged council management to engage proactively with employees and union representatives to preempt similar situations in the future. Nalumisa also highlighted the procedural inadequacies during the protest, reinforcing the need for adherence to employment laws.

In a positive turn of events, following the developments, the protesting workers have returned to their duties, indicating a step towards restoring normal operations within the council. This situation reflects an ongoing commitment to improving local government dynamics and employee relations in Fiji. Enhanced cooperation and communication within the council can lead to more effective governance and ultimately benefit the community of Ba.
