Ba Rugby Union is gearing up for an action-packed 2026 season, as evidenced by the release of its official year planner. The planner showcases a comprehensive lineup of competitions and activities beginning with the Annual General Meeting scheduled for March 7. Following this, a development tournament for youth categories—U14, U16, and U18—will kick off on March 21 and culminate on May 2.
Excitingly, 4R Stadium at Govind Park in Ba is set to host its first-ever Super Rugby match on March 28, featuring the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua taking on the Brumbies. The local club games will commence on May 9 with an opening round of eight matches, leading towards the finals anticipated on July 18. Subsequently, preparations will begin for the first round of the Skipper Cup, which is slated to start on July 25.
Gabby Kautoga, the secretary of Ba Rugby, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming year, emphasizing the union’s commitment to development across various levels. “We are looking forward to an exciting year, especially with the programs we have planned for development,” Kautoga stated.
A key initiative for Ba Rugby in 2026 is the establishment of an academy at Ba Methodist High School. This academy aims to cultivate young rugby talent and solidify a pathway for aspiring players in the district. In parallel, Kautoga mentioned that the union is working toward accrediting local teachers with Level One and Level Two coaching qualifications, in addition to ensuring that local rugby clubs adhere to established accreditation standards.
“This year we are focusing on development, from schools to clubs. We want our teachers and coaches to be properly accredited so they can help build the future of Ba Rugby,” he remarked. With a structured calendar and a strong emphasis on development, Ba Rugby is optimistic that 2026 will prove to be a landmark year for the sport within the district. “It will be an exciting year for Ba Rugby,” Kautoga affirmed, highlighting the union’s positive outlook for the future.
