The Ba province is advocating for heightened domestic measures to safeguard Fiji’s waters in light of a significant drug seizure at Vatia in Tavua last week. Ba Provincial Council chairman Meli Tora has called upon the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) to collaborate with police in increasing maritime patrols following a raid that resulted in the arrest of six individuals, including four Ecuadorians and two locals, along with the confiscation of over 100 bags suspected to contain cocaine.

Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu confirmed that the operation was executed with the involvement of several units, including the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the Serious Organised Crime and Intelligence Department (SOCID), and the Western Division Taskforce, in conjunction with international law enforcement agencies.

Tora emphasized the importance of a robust domestic response to drug trafficking threats, expressing a desire for enhanced sea patrols and military support for police operations. He cautioned against becoming overly reliant on foreign assistance, as local efforts are critical in curbing crime.

Additionally, Tora proposed the establishment of grassroots intelligence networks that include community leaders, advocating for integrity within law enforcement. He noted that some individuals linked to law enforcement might be involved in the drug trade, underscoring the necessity for dedicated individuals who genuinely care about combating this issue.

Investigations into the Vatia drug seizure are still underway, highlighting the ongoing commitment to tackle organized crime in the region. The call for stronger local action and collaboration signals a positive step towards improving the safety and security of Fiji’s maritime environment.
