The Province of Ba is stepping up its efforts against drug influences by implementing rigorous measures and reinforcing traditional taboos throughout the area. This proactive stance comes in light of a recent significant drug bust at Vatia Wharf, with Provincial Council Chair Ratu Meli Tora emphasizing the urgent need for action. He remarked that the escalation of the drug problem was a wake-up call and acknowledged that traditional leaders should have taken earlier steps to combat it.

“We should have been proactive,” Ratu Meli stated, noting that the drug issue has been a lingering threat, particularly from neighboring countries, and that local leaders did not adequately prepare for it. He pointed out that certain regions in Ba, including Vatia and Sonaisali, are especially vulnerable due to the increased tourist activity in and around Nadi.

In a commendable show of unity, Ratu Meli praised the leaders of the Tui Sabeto and Tui Vuda for their decisive action in temporarily prohibiting the use of yaqona, alcohol, and cigarettes to underline their commitment in the fight against drugs. Furthermore, he mentioned ongoing discussions with the Provincial Officer focusing on addressing drug-related issues across all areas in Ba, including informal settlements.

This collective initiative demonstrates a determined response to a pressing challenge and highlights the importance of community-based efforts in maintaining a safe and healthy environment for residents and visitors alike. By actively engaging traditional leaders and the community, Ba is working toward reclaiming its spaces from the pervasive influence of drugs.
