The Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Reflects on the Dark Past
On commemorating the day of the 2000 mutiny, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto, reflected on one of the darkest moments in the history of the RFMF and Fiji. He emphasized their commitment to never let such an occurrence happen again.
RFMF and Fiji’s Darkest Day
November 2, 2000, witnessed a shocking mutiny incident in Fiji that has imprinted on the minds of the RFMF and the Fijian community. The RFMF regards it as one of its bleakest moments, revealing how issues that could have been resolved via dialogue and understanding instead escalated to bloodshed and disturbance of peace.
The mutiny was carried out against the then Fiji Military Forces Commander, now Fijian Prime Minister, Frank Bainimarama. It resulted in the deaths of four loyal soldiers and left several others injured. With great pain and sorrow, Rear Admiral Naupoto remembered the soldiers they lost and the families that were affected. He mentioned that recalling such events should remind everyone about the importance of unity, as their profession mandates peacekeeping.
Endeavors for a Peaceful Fiji
Naupoto vowed that the RFMF is working hard every day to ensure such a detrimental episode doesn’t occur again. Under his leadership, the RFMF strives not to let personal interests compromise national interests. He stated that everyone should remember the past to learn, but not to dwell on it, thus bolstering the spirit of unity and respect in the division.
He highlighted the RFMF’s commitment to uphold national values and called on everyone to maintain peace and stability by reinforcing dialogue and understanding. He urged all components of the Fijian community to join forces to ensure Fiji never has to experience such a dark day again.
