Students in Nausori have gained a valuable resource with the inauguration of a new Student Support Services Hub at Sila Central High School. This facility was officially launched by Aseri Radrodro, representing the fifth hub of its kind to be established across the country this year.
The creation of this hub, funded by the Australian Government with an investment of FJD$45,000, involves the addition of a full-time counsellor dedicated to providing professional and confidential support to students. The hub will serve students from the regions of Tailevu, Rewa, and Naitasiri, providing essential psychosocial assistance, guidance services, and referrals to specialized agencies when necessary.
This initiative is part of broader national strategies outlined in the Fiji National Drug Policy, the Child Protection Policy in Schools, and frameworks established by the National Substance Abuse Advisory Council, all focused on prevention, early intervention, and rehabilitation.
Recent disciplinary statistics from the Nausori area underscore the pressing need for improved student support systems. In 2025, drug-related incidents reached 3,143 cases (1.5%), while violence accounted for a striking 33,058 cases (16%). Additionally, sexual-related cases amounted to 1,024 (0.5%), and social media-related issues represented 248 cases (0.1%).
Education officials have emphasized that the new centre is designed to create a safe and welcoming environment for students, ensuring they have a place to seek help and receive timely care in the face of challenges such as substance abuse, violence, or trauma. This positive development reflects a proactive approach to student welfare, aiming to enhance the overall well-being of young individuals in the community.
