Aunt Sentenced for Disturbing Crime Against Niece: What This Means for Child Protection

A 27-year-old woman has been sentenced to 11 years and six months in prison after being found guilty of digitally raping her 12-year-old niece and threatening her to remain silent about the abuse. This ruling was pronounced by Justice Waleen George at the High Court in Suva on Monday. The court deemed the sentence to be served concurrently, along with a non-parole period of six years, as well as a Permanent Domestic Violence Restraining Order against the perpetrator.

The abuse took place during a sleepover at the victim’s home between January and December 2021. It was reported that while the victim was asleep, the aunt initiated unwanted contact and threatened her if she spoke out. The abuse remained undisclosed until a male friend noticed suspicious behavior and questioned the victim, prompting her to confide in him. This led to the matter being reported to the police.

In delivering the verdict, Justice George highlighted the alarming prevalence of child sexual exploitation and abuse in Fiji, particularly by individuals who hold positions of trust. The judge emphasized the need for the court to impose strict punishment to deter such heinous acts from occurring in the future.

The case mirrors other recent legal proceedings in Fiji that address similar crimes committed within familial relationships. These cases underscore an urgent need to raise awareness about child protection and the importance of creating a safe environment for children.

As the judicial system actively addresses these distressing trends, there is hope that more victims will find the courage to speak out and seek justice, helping pave the way for stronger protective measures and societal change to prevent such abuses from continuing.
