The legal proceedings involving former health minister Dr. Neil Sharma, former prime minister Voreqe Bainimarama, and former attorney-general Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum continue to evolve as the defense teams request additional time and materials in light of serious allegations against them.
During a recent court session in Suva, Krisheel Chang, representing Dr. Sharma, informed Senior Magistrate Sufia Hamza that he is yet to receive the notice of motion from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). He has requested that this be provided before the close of business today. The charges against this high-profile trio include abuse of office, obstructing justice, and breach of trust, stemming from events that allegedly occurred in 2011 when they were in office.
Both defense attorneys sought extended periods to respond to the State’s motion, with Chang requesting 21 days while lawyer Gul Fatima, representing Bainimarama and Sayed-Khaiyum, sought 14 days. Magistrate Hamza has deferred the matter until June 10, during which the motion hearing and an election on the court where the case will be tried are scheduled to take place.
The charges are serious: Dr. Sharma faces two counts of abuse of office and two counts of breach of trust, while Mr. Sayed-Khaiyum is charged with one count of abuse of office and one count of obstructing justice, and Mr. Bainimarama with one count of abuse of office. The case revolves around allegations that they did not adhere to statutory requirements outlined in the 2010 Procurement Regulations.
