A total of 905 athletes are set to compete in the Suva Zone 2 athletics competition over the next two days at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, as they aspire to secure their place in the prestigious Fiji Finals scheduled for next month. This event is particularly significant as it marks the 50th anniversary of the national finals, adding a festive dimension to the competition.
Savenca Muamua, president of the Fiji Secondary School Amateur Athletics Central, highlights the elevated stakes this year, emphasizing the tough competition among athletes vying for coveted spots at the Fiji Finals. With safety being a primary concern, a substantial police presence, including canine units, will be on-site to ensure the welfare of participants and spectators in light of increasing crime and drug-related concerns.
Viewers can catch the live coverage of the Suva Zone 2 and Zone 1 events on FBC Sports and viti.plus for audiences abroad. Alongside Suva Zone 2, six additional zone competitions will also take place across Fiji over Thursday and Friday, including the Ovalau Zone, Macuata Zone One and Two, Bua, Savusavu, and Taveuni. The Lautoka Zone will hold its competition on Friday and Saturday at Churchill Park.
This year’s celebrations not only commemorate a half-century of athletic excellence but also serve to inspire young athletes to strive for their best performances. The anticipation surrounding these events symbolizes a vibrant culture of sports and community engagement across Fiji.
