Catholic churches throughout Fiji experienced significant attendance today as congregants gathered to observe Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of the Lenten season. From morning until evening Mass, families, youths, and seniors received ashes on their foreheads in the shape of a cross, symbolizing a time of repentance and reflection as they embark on the 40-day journey toward Easter.

Tino Tokalau, a member of the church, emphasized that Lent is a period dedicated to self-reflection and sacrifice. He expressed, “It’s about thinking of what we’re going to give up and what we’re going to sacrifice for Lent.” Despite the challenges of modern life, Tokalau noted that maintaining faith and a positive outlook remains crucial. He added, “As long as we have strong faith, we’ll keep pushing through. Be kind to others — kindness is free.”

Another church member, Kusitino Colaudolu, who is also a student at FNU, shared that Ash Wednesday serves as a reminder of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. Colaudolu plans to give up distractions that pull him away from prayer and aims to strengthen his faith by attending Mass regularly. He encourages those who face difficulties to keep praying, stating, “Every time you face hardship, always pray so that He can give you strength.”

As Lent continues over the next six weeks, Catholics will engage in prayer, fasting, and renewal as they prepare for Easter, reaffirming their commitment to their faith during this significant liturgical season. This period offers a hopeful reminder of resilience and the importance of community and spirituality, encouraging individuals to find strength and inspiration through their beliefs.
