Lambert Ho, one of Fiji’s most renowned visual artists, continues to thrive in his career that spans nearly 40 years. Recently, he embarked on a journey to the remote island of Rotuma on December 20, where he has fully immersed himself in the local culture and landscape while engaging in his passion for painting.

As part of a volunteer group with the Läje Rotuma Initiative (LRI), Lambert is working to promote environmental education and community awareness among the island’s youth. This initiative helps empower local children by encouraging them to express their stories through various forms of art, including murals and fabric painting. As Lambert describes, “I traveled to Rotuma as an artist and volunteer for Läje Rotuma Initiative,” indicating his commitment to both his craft and the community’s development.

Living in the picturesque village of Noatau, Lambert has enjoyed the hospitality and rich traditions of Rotuma. His experiences have included celebrating the festive season with local residents through dancing and feasting, which he fondly recalls as a time of “lots of feasting and dancing”—highlighting the close-knit nature of the community.

Despite being a volunteer program, Lambert has reached out for support from friends to gather materials necessary for their art activities. He is particularly grateful for the welcome he received, stating, “I am deeply grateful and humbled. Faiaksia!” His fondness for the island extends beyond his artistic endeavors; he appreciates the values of simplicity and humility present in the Rotuman way of life.

Lambert’s travels and experiences in Fiji have not only influenced his art, but also enriched his personal outlook, proving that the connections made with individuals and communities can be as impactful as the art itself. His adventures in Rotuma serve as a testament to the power of art in bridging cultural gaps and fostering understanding among diverse communities.

Overall, Lambert Ho’s time on Rotuma exemplifies the beauty of community and collaboration through art, demonstrating that despite the passage of nearly four decades in his career, his passion for sharing and creating remains vibrant and inspiring.
