For 26-year-old Josua Tuimanu, drawing is more than a mere pastime; it is an essential outlet for therapy and personal expression. As a graphic designer and communications specialist, Josua finds solace in sketching and drawing, navigating the pressures of his demanding role at one of Fiji’s largest ministries, where he focuses on international trade and small businesses.

Growing up under strong parental expectations to pursue a law career, Josua instead followed his passion for art, dedicating his time to improve his drawing and sketching skills. He draws inspiration from his upbringing in both Fiji and Australia, integrating the influences of Japanese culture alongside the renowned artistry of the Renaissance, with figures such as Michelangelo and street artist Banksy shaping his artistic philosophy.

Josua is self-taught in graphic design, utilizing resources like YouTube, in addition to formal education at Fiji National University. After the COVID-19 pandemic, he transitioned from Telecom Fiji to Walesi and then onto the Ministry of Trade, where he harmonizes creativity with communication strategies.

Admiring the relentless pursuit of perfection seen in artists like Michelangelo and the socially provocative messages of Banksy, Josua instills in his practice the belief that artists should challenge conventional standards and innovate continuously.

Looking ahead, Josua plans to showcase his work at a sustainable development expo in Osaka, Japan, later this year. He regards this as a significant opportunity to immerse himself in the rich culture and community spirit of Japan, which he admires for its respect and humility, underscoring the value of education that nurtures personal growth from childhood.

Additionally, Josua acknowledges the challenges presented by artificial intelligence in the creative realm, recognizing its potential benefits while cautioning against the risk of diminishing authentic artistic expression. He stresses the importance of self-discipline and resilience in nurturing one’s creativity, urging fellow artists to venture beyond their limits.

Josua Tuimanu’s story highlights the profound impact of art on personal development and showcases the promising avenues for artists in an era marked by technological advancements. His journey serves as an encouraging reminder of the necessity of pursuing one’s passions and remaining true to creative roots in today’s evolving artistic landscape.
