ARMY Green celebrated a significant victory as they broke a long-standing winless streak by winning the Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s trophy, defeating Police Blue 21-5 in the men’s cup final. This triumph marked their first trophy at the Wairiki 7s, a tournament they have participated in since its inception.
The match started with Police Blue scoring the first unconverted try, but Army Green’s defense proved impenetrable as they denied any further scoring opportunities for their opponents. The game shifted in favor of Army Green as they secured several tries, culminating in a final effort that brought great joy to their supporters.
Jonetani Mudreilagi, the assistant manager for Army Green, expressed his delight at the victory and gratitude for the support received during the tournament. He stated, “We are thankful that we were able to conclude our mission in Wairiki with a win today.” He highlighted the importance of this triumph, reflecting on the team’s long journey towards achieving this goal.
The team traveled to Taveuni on the Goundar Shipping vessel MV Lady Daya, enduring a lengthy 22-hour voyage from Suva. Mudreilagi extended his gratitude to their families and fellow army officers for their unwavering support throughout the tournament.
In addition to the glory of lifting the trophy, Army Green also took home $10,000 in prize money, which further added to the celebration of their historic win.
