Ardie Savea has been appointed as the captain for the Moana Pasifika team in the upcoming 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season. This decision has come after Savea’s transition from the Hurricanes, where he spent time before his stint in Japan and his subsequent move in July to join the team considered underdogs in the league.

At 31 years old, Savea brings a wealth of experience, having played 94 Tests for the All Blacks and first captaining the national team in 2021. He expressed his gratitude for this new leadership role, feeling it aligns with a greater purpose. “It’s pretty special and I believe it’s God’s purpose for me to lead,” said Savea. He emphasized the importance of personal accountability and performance both on and off the field, stating, “I’ve got to lead myself first.”

The team recently participated in a bonding camp, allowing Savea to forge connections with his new teammates, some of whom he had not met prior to joining. He acknowledged the value in learning from the existing leaders within the team, remarking on the important relationships being built. Head coach Tana Umaga praised Savea as a diligent worker and a remarkable role model who sets a high standard for those around him, which is crucial for motivating and uplifting the team.

Despite the challenges ahead, as Moana Pasifika has only won seven out of 42 matches in their first three seasons, Umaga is hopeful that with dedication and hard work, the team can turn their fortunes around. He noted that the preparation for Super Rugby 2025 at North Harbour Stadium, where they share facilities with A-League football club Auckland FC, is already positively affecting team morale.

Umaga also expressed satisfaction with the team’s training efforts and the camaraderie developing among the players. “We need to work hard this year… we know those things won’t come without hard work,” he said, setting a tone of resilience and determination for the season ahead.

Overall, the combination of Savea’s leadership and the team’s dedication leaves room for optimism as they aim to transform their fortunes in the upcoming season of Super Rugby.
