Ambassador Urges Dialogue Amid New Caledonia Tension

The French Ambassador to Fiji, François-Xavier Léger, has urged for increased dialogue to address the ongoing political tension in New Caledonia.

This call came following a demonstration by Fijian activists in Suva, who rallied in support of the ‘Kanaky’—the indigenous people of New Caledonia.

The Ambassador expressed his approval of the democratic process in Fiji, emphasizing the significance of freedom of expression.

He mentioned that there is a political process currently in place, and the French government has faced some political challenges.

“People will either oppose or support it. As the French Embassy here in Fiji, we are here to listen to comments, whether positive or negative,” Ambassador Léger stated.

“I am pleased to see the people of Fiji exercising their right to demonstrate. It demonstrates the vitality of democracy in Fiji that everyone can express their opinion,” he added. “I am comfortable with people having different opinions about the situation in New Caledonia.”

He believes that the solution lies in fostering more dialogue and conversations around the issue, as well as finding common ground through open and constructive communication.

“The solution lies in fostering more dialogue and conversation around the issue,” he reiterated.

The call for dialogue highlights the need for a peaceful resolution and underscores the importance of inclusive discussions involving all stakeholders in New Caledonia’s future.
