A 24-year-old man charged with the murder of a 25-year-old during a dispute last month has been granted a $1,000 non-cash bail bond. Kaline Masibalavu appeared in court before Justice Thushara Rajasinghe, facing accusations related to the stabbing death of Sanaila Bavesi on the night of November 2 in Suva.

Following the incident, Bavesi was transported to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. The state lawyer, Unal Lal, did not oppose bail after conducting thorough surety checks, leading to the acceptance of Masibalavu’s mother and uncle as sureties. While out on bail, Masibalavu will reside with his uncle, who is self-employed, in Sawani.

Justice Rajasinghe granted Mr. Lal 14 days to complete and submit full phase disclosures. The court also reminded Masibalavu’s lawyer to prepare proposed agreed facts if his client pleads not guilty in the next court session. Standard bail conditions have been imposed, with the case set to be adjourned until February 7 of next year.

This development highlights the ongoing legal process in serious cases, ensuring that due process is followed while balancing the rights of the accused with the ongoing investigation. The legal system’s careful consideration in granting bail, despite the serious charge, reflects an emphasis on justice and procedural fairness. It also marks the beginning of a long journey toward resolution for both the accused and the victim’s family, who will continue to seek justice in the coming months.
